శివపార్వతులిద్దరు ఒకే పానమట్టం మీద దర్శనమివ్వడం ఈ ఆలయప్రత్యేకత. ఈ పానమట్టం ఏకఱాతిశిల. దీని నాలుగుమూలలా నాలుగు కాళ్లు ఉండి దానిపై పైనమట్టం నిలిచి ఉంటుంది.పానమట్టం భూమిని తాకక పోవడం ఒక ప్రత్యేకత.
 

హిమవంతుని కుమార్తె గా జన్మించిన పార్వతీదేవి పరమశివుని కోసం ఘోర తపస్సు చేసి, శంకరుని మెప్పించింది. సప్తఋషులు పెళ్లి పెద్దలుగా వెళ్లి వివాహాన్ని నిశ్చయం చేశారు. కమనీయమైన పార్వతీ పరమేశ్వరుల కళ్యాణ వేడుకను కనులారా గాంచడానికి సమస్త ప్రాణికోటి ఉత్తరాపథానికి బయలుదేరింది. జీవకోటి భారంతో ఉత్తరాపథం కృంగి పోయే ప్రమాదం సంభవించింది.
 

ఆ సమయంలో పరమేశ్వరుడు స్వయంగా అగస్త్యమహర్షిని పిలిపించి, తక్షణమే దక్షిణాపథానికి వెళ్లి ఒక పవిత్ర ప్రదేశంలో శివపార్వతులను ప్రతిష్ఠించి, పూజలు జరిపితే తమ కల్యాణం చూచిన ఫలం లభిస్తుందని, వెంటనే ఆ పని చేయవలసిందని ఆజ్ఞాపించాడు. మహేశ్వరుని ఆజ్ఞను శిరసావహించి, మహా తప స్సంపన్నుడైన అగస్త్యుడు దక్షిణాపథానికి విచ్చేసి, ఘంటసాల ను పవిత్ర ప్రదేశంగా ఎన్నుకొని పానమట్టంమిద శివపార్వతులను ప్రతిష్ఠించి, ఏకాగ్రతతో పూజాదికాలు నిర్వహించి శ్రీస్వామివారి సాక్షాత్ కళ్యాణమహోత్సవసందర్శన భాగ్యాన్ని పొందాడు. ఆనాటి నుండి దక్షిణకైలాసం గా ఈ క్షేత్రం విరాజిల్లుతోంది. 

ఈ ఆలయ గోపురం” గజపృష్టాకార గోపురం” గా పిలవబడుతోంది. అంటే సాధారణ ఆలయాల గోపురం వలే కాకుండా ఇది మూడు శిఖరాలను కలిగిఉంటుంది. తంజావూరు బృహదీశ్వరాలయ గోపురం మాత్రమే ఇటువంటి ఆకృతిని కలిగి ఉంది విమాన శిఖరం ఎత్తు కూడ 45 అడుగులవరకు ఉంటుంది. ఈ విమానగోపురం పాటిమట్టి తో నిర్మించబడి తరువాత కాలంలో సిమెంటు ప్లాస్టింగ్ చేయబడింది.
 

మహామేరు శ్రీ చక్రం ఈ ఆలయంలో అమ్మవారి ముందు అర్చించ బడుతోంది.32కిలోలబరువు తో,9అంగళాల ఎత్తు కలిగి పంచలోహాలతో చేయబడిన ఈ శ్రీ చక్రాన్ని కంచి పీఠాథిపతుల అనుగ్రహంతో కంచి పీఠంనుండి తెచ్చి ప్రతిష్టించడం జరిగింది . పూజ్యశ్రీ రామేశ్వరానందగిరి స్వామి వారిచే ఆలయములో అమ్మవారి పాదముల చెంత ఉంచబడి పూజించబడుతోంది. 

కంచిపీఠాథిపతి శ్రీశ్రీశ్రీ జగద్గురు జయేంద్రసరస్వతీ స్వామి వారు ఈ ఆలయంలోని పీఠాన్ని అర్థనారీశ్వర పీఠంగా నిర్థారించారు.
 

ఏకపీఠంపై వెలసిన శివపార్వతుల వలెనే నవగ్రహాలకు చెందిన దేవతామూర్తులు కూడ సతీసమేతులై ఈ ఆలయము నందలి నవగ్రహమండపం లో కొలువు తీరి ఉండటం మరొక ప్రత్యేకత.ఇటువంటి నిర్మాణం చాలా అరుదుగా దర్శనమిస్తుంది.

 ఏలినాటిశని నుండి అన్నిరకాల శనిదోష నివారణకు, రాహుకేతు పూజలకు ఈ మందిరం అత్యంత ప్రసిద్ది.
